Situation
Field Day is an annual amateur radio
exercise run by the National Association for Amateur Radio encouraging
emergency communications preparedness among operators in Canada and the
United States. The intent is to practice the rapid deployment of
radio communications equipment in environments ranging from operations
under tents in remote areas to inside Emergency Operations Centres.

Emergency radio communications exercise
held from Saturday June 27 07:00 to Sunday June 28 15:00.
Over 60 personnel participated in
this Toronto based exercise representing multiple organizations including:
- Toronto Office of Emergency Management
- 709 (Toronto) Communication Regiment
- 700 Communications Squadron
- 705 Communication Squadron
- Toronto Police Services
- Toronto EmComm
- York Region EmComm
- Emergency Management Ontario
The exercise was open to the public
to observe or even try out the radios. We were in communicating with
radio stations all over North America. This is an annual exercise
to help better prepare the City of Toronto for numerous types of emergencies.
Over 350 contacts were made during
the 24 hour exercise which included the following locations;
Canada:
Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland,
Manitoba and British Columbia.
USA:
Alabama, California, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New
Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington,
West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Location
Our goal was to set up a mobile
field communication centre in playing field area at Marc Garneau CI
135 Overlea Boulevard,
consisting of four CP tents including
DRASH shelter, three CP trucks, sleeping and feeding tent plus support
vehicles. This is an excellent site for radio antennas, security
to the area was augmented by the military and Toronto Police Service.

Motorola radios along with programming computer were donated to Toronto
EmComm & 709 Communication Regiment by Toronto Police Service when
they upgrade their Metro-Net Service to digital.

A total of four stations set-up
for Field Day operations;

generators, tables, sleeping area, setup and test radio equipment.

Notes:
1- The emphasis this year
was on our ability for rapid deployment and operations setup (how long
before we are up and operational from boots on the ground) 5 hours.
2- The ability to provide
continuous multiple communications networks over a 24 hour period.
